GSH - WellSpan Sechler Family Cancer Center
The design and construction of a new comprehensive cancer center was tested with time and budget constraints. The location straddled two Lebanon County townships and posed the challenge of attaching the new structure to the hospital’s existing wound care center, designed a number of years ago by Beers + Hoffman.
The design was created to present the feeling of a warm, non-institutional environment which included a full range of spaces, such as infusion and radiation therapies, a spiritual retreat, clinical, laboratory, pharmacy, educational, and business related functions. The construction of the Sechler Family Cancer Center has succeeded in bringing comprehensive services to Lebanon County in a warm, friendly and domestically scaled facility. A unique composition, the infusion bays are non-traditionally oriented to the nursing center, allowing them to have full height glass walls facing a sun friendly North exposure.
The entire infusion area has an intimate view of a 100 foot long pond with waterfalls at each end. The natural view is complimented by surrounding evergreens, butterfly bushes, bird houses and a large stocking of fish. The effect is an area of soft full light with calming natural views for patients who often spend many hours during each treatment visit.
It’s [The Sechler Family Cancer Center] is an incredibly creative, beautiful space, and yet it was done in such a way that it is affordable, cost effective, and very, very efficient for those that will work there.
